Emily Martinez
Emily’s work focuses on innovation and adaptation in the global human rights ecosystem to support activists to make forward progress in a rapidly changing the world. Throughout her career spanning over two decades, she has aimed to strengthen philanthropy’s role in supporting human rights, democracy, and civil society around the world. Most recently, she served as the Director for Initiatives at the Open Society Foundations, where she led the development of new strategies on democratic organizing, environmental rights, and debt justice. Before that, she founded and led the Human Rights Initiative at the Open Society Foundations, building it into a grant-making hub supporting rights and equality work globally. Emily has designed and guided human rights programs as a director and a board member, helping them navigate strategic and organizational challenges. She has worked at the global, regional and national levels across a range of rights areas, including HRD protection and civic space, disability and LGBTI rights, and accountability and justice. Emily lived and worked in Central and Eastern Europe for over a decade and has also worked extensively in countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
