Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence
Building the scaffolding for mandatory HREDD
A Roadmap for Integrating Human Rights into ISSB Standards
Globally momentum is building for legislation requiring companies and investors to conduct human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) throughout their operations. The EU Corporate Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), which was first adopted in July 2024 and revised through an Omnibus process in 2025, was a watershed in this effort. The Directive obliges large companies operating within the EU to identify, prevent, and mitigate adverse human rights and environmental impacts in their supply chains.
Rights CoLab’s HREDD initiative helps build the infrastructure needed to ensure new legal and policy initiatives like the CSDDD achieve their intended outcomes. We equip investors, buyers, and other stakeholders with the data and tools they need to assess the quality of HREDD of their portfolio companies and suppliers, so they can better identify human rights and environmental risks and opportunities and strengthen corporate stewardship. We also test new approaches, including creating a regularly updated repository of community-driven due diligence data on critical minerals and establishing an independent mechanism to fund technical and legal support for communities affected by land-based projects. In addition, we advocate for stronger integration of human rights into sustainability standard-setting initiatives.
