Globally momentum is building for legislation requiring companies and investors to conduct human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) throughout their operations. The EU Corporate Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), which came into force in July 2024, was a watershed in this effort. The Directive obliges large companies and financial institutions, including investors, operating within the EU to identify, prevent, and mitigate adverse human rights and environmental impacts in their supply chains.

Rights CoLab’s HREDD initiative contributes to building the scaffolding to ensure these initiatives meet their objectives. We equip investors with the tools they need to evaluate the quality of the HREDD of their portfolio companies and advocate for better integration of HREDD into the ISSB standards. We also experiment with new approaches, such as creating an independent mechanism for private sector funding of technical and legal support for communities affected by land-based projects and enabling civil society to be market actors by serving as commercial data providers.

This work is made possible through the support of the Generation Foundation, Humanity United, and the Tipping Point Fund on Impact Investing.
