There is not enough funding to sustain the NGOs that help drive the human rights movement. After exploring the field extensively, Louis Bickford established a social enterprise that is dedicated to helping partners collect, curate, and distribute stories. The effort to create a hybrid for-profit/not-for-profit entity has not been without challenges, and the model will not work in every area of human rights work, but Bickford’s experience shows the potential. In this essay, Bickford demonstrates the value of creative efforts to deploy market logic to help solve social problems.
